Arab world

International Arabic Language Day is celebrated on December 18 to commemorate its adoption as an official language of the UN in 1973. UNESCO proclaimed it in 2010 to promote linguistic diversity and intercultural dialogue. Arabic, with over 450 million speakers, was key in the transmission of knowledge during the Middle Ages and contributed to fields such as science, philosophy, poetry and architecture.

Many libraries in the network, including those with specialized collections —such as the Sant Pau-Santa Creu library in Barcelona, Sabadell-Can Puiggener or Abrera—, promote this language and culture. More information [+]
